Dutch Professional Association of Sonographers in obstetrics and gynaecology (BEN)
In 1998, sonographers founded the Dutch Professional Association of Sonographers in obstetrics and gynaecology (BEN). The BEN’s main objectives are to represent and look after the interests of sonographers and to improve quality of care.
The BEN is primarily intended for everybody who (is training to) perform(s) sonography in obstetrics/midwifery and/or gynaecology; but also, for who’s interested in this discipline. Here you can find the most recent professional profile of sonographers in obstetrics and/or gynaecology (in Dutch).
In 2021 the BEN has grown to represent more than 850 members. The board meets on a monthly base and participates in a variety of meetings with third parties such as the Department of Prenatal Screening of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), other professional associations (such as the Royal Dutch association of Midwives, the Dutch Society of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, etcetera), and collaborates in scientific research and development of guidelines on sonography. Furthermore, the members of the board are closely and actively involved with both the professional field and the educational institutes concerning quality improvement. If current situations in obstetrics or gynaecology request so, the board can consult a group of experts.
The BEN has a quality register with specifications on the diversity of sonographic examinations performed in obstetrics and/or gynaecology. Biannual registration guarantees information about the current qualifications of the registered sonographers. This register can be publicly consulted by clients or patients, employers and insurance companies. The BEN also has a certification system for commercial sonography centres.
The BEN organises an annual general meeting for its members (ALV) enriched with scientific lectures. Once a year the BEN organises a scientific symposium with (inter-) national lectures on current themes in ultrasound in obstetrics and/or gynaecology. Furthermore, the BEN organises several hands-on workshops that have been received very enthusiastically in the past few years.
The key values the BEN strives for are: “commitment, current developments, activity and visibility”. Feel free to contact us with your questions or ideas, we would like to keep you up-to-date. The BEN is looking forward to meet you during its activities and, together with you, wants to show that sonography is a specialty!
